(Personnel) How do summer teaching appointments affect an employee’s benefit eligibility?

All summer instructors (i.e., regular-rank faculty, visiting faculty, lecturers, Associates) and Teaching Assistants are appointed on a “by agreement” basis and are paid a flat rate. Per the Affordable Care Act, this type of appointment is now included in the calculation to determine eligibility for UC benefits; however, by itself, a summer-only teaching appointment with no other university employment will not provide immediate medical, dental or vision coverage. It is listed as a GROUP B appointment type on the Benefits Eligibility Requirements checklist.

If an academic appointee has a GROUP A appointment type, then the hours of service associated with a summer teaching appointment will be counted during the Standard Measurement Period (SMP).
